Twin Galaxies Video Game Festival - Part Two
- By Mike
Schneider
Obviously then, despite my enjoyment of just mingling around, the main draw of this festival was the games -- and the tournaments that were taking place throughout the three day assembly.
"Twin Galaxies is the font where video players worship..." - The Toronto Sunday Star, (March 27, 1983)
The Toronto Sun realized it more than 18 years ago, and it's definitely true today. Through a long process, one of which was vastly supported by Nintendo Power, among other unlikely sources, Twin Galaxies became the official scorekeeper of all world records in videogames.
This book, which we brought home with us for free, contains zillions of world records in videogames.
Although Tariq and myself were unable to participate in any of the tournaments that took place, we witnessed some very intense Marvel vs. Capcom 2 battles on the Dreamcast, with other 'Console Video Game World Championships" for SSX and Twisted Metal Black [PS2]; and Super Smash Brothers, WWF Mercy, and Mario Kart 64 [N64] being battled out during the days, as well. Then, on the PC side of things, there were tournaments for Counter-Strike, and Quake 3 Arena.
This is a certificate that some lucky and skillful gamer was able to walk home with -- and also a verified spot in the next addition of the world records book.
The whole concept is really fun and is something that the big three should look into doing more of in the future, even if console games are more frequently revolved around online gaming. Organizing gamers at one central location is a good time.
Moreover, Twin Galaxies definitely supplied a draw that can definitely help bring gaming even more to the non-game playing public. A boxing game that was not only fun, but also a work out, was quite possibly the most popular attraction at the festival.
A very popular game amongst the festival goers.
