Editorials   Resident Evil: The Mature Genre Comes to Cube
- By Nick Williams [Contributing Editor]

When I first saw the news that the Resident Evil series was coming to the GameCube, I never believed it would happen. When I read further to find that the series was going to be a GameCube exclusive, I thought it was all some cruel joke. Now it’s actually happening, and in a few short months the first of many, many Resident Evil titles will be available for Cube owners: Resident Evil 1. The question I ask is this: Will this change the way people see GameCube? If this is the goal, Nintendo has a lot of work to do.

What is the importance of a mature genre anyway? Many hardcore Nintendo fans would say it is not important at all. What makes Nintendo so great is the innovation, as can be seen in games like Pikmin and Super Monkey Ball. However, there is a widening population of older gamers who disagree. Many of these people (apparently more mature than I) feel the need to see more blood and zombies, and especially blood coming out of zombies. This is a fact that just hasn’t changed over the years. So, now that Capcom beckons these gamers to come to cube, will they? Should Nintendo expect people to switch systems for Resident Evil? I don’t think they should. Chances are most PS2 players are feeling fine with their fancy Silent Hills and Metal Gear Solids. It seems like such a good idea to appeal to the more mature crowd, but I just don’t think it’s going to work.

First of all, we need to look at the variety of games coming out in this “mature” genre. I would say that there are really only two that have great potential. It would have been three, but Onimusha is not going to appear on the Cube anymore despite earlier announcements. This only adds to my concern. If Capcom canceled this project, will they cancel another? The first game is the Resident Evil series. I’m blocking them all together because in my opinion, if the one succeeds they all will. The second one is Eternal Darkness. As usual, there is an assortment of fighting and shooting games coming out, but none are truly “mature” games in my opinion.

Both of these games have strong potential. I can’t say enough about how great Eternal Darkness played at Cube Club this fall. The fighting is exciting, the story intriguing (what little you could see, anyway). I felt it was the best game of E3 2001. Resident Evil looks marvelous. I already know the game is great and just looking at screen shots scares me. I can’t wait to play this game. It looks beautiful, has a complex story, and it’s challenging. It will be a fantastic game. I just don’t think it will sell. Releasing Resident Evil 2 on N64 didn’t work very well. It is too late for GameCube, or Nintendo, to appeal to this collective of mature gamers. They have an established fan base, so I say cater to them. As we all know, there are tons of fantastic games that will be coming out for the GameCube. Just because they don’t contain tons of blood and an “M” on the disk doesn’t mean they are bad. I say let’s all be content with our acquired taste for sweet, sweet Nintendo just the way it is.
