Editorials   No More Nuts
- By Mike Schneider [Editor In Chief]

I once read in a Rareware Scribes that the Conker team considered ending Conker’s Bad Fur Day with him pulling a gun on himself; however, they ultimately opted not to so it would be left open for a sequel.

I don’t know what got me to thinking about this now, though perhaps it was Michael, Dan, and Travis’s editorial about Rare; however, I feel very confident in saying that we as Nintendo gamers will never again play a Conker game on a Nintendo console.

Rare knows Conker’s BFD could have been huge had it been marketed correctly. We also know that Nintendo went skimpy on Conker hype, and even neglected to cover it in Nintendo Power. Rare knows that both Sony and Microsoft have done a better job than Nintendo at marketing their consoles as being hip. Everybody knows Conker would sell best to an older audience. Everybody also knows that Conker’s BFD only sold roughly 350,000 units on a Nintendo console. Due to all of these reasons, you can bet your walnuts that Conker will burrow himself as far from the Nintendo Camp as possible.

Another thing to consider is that Rare has the copyright on the Conker franchise – not Nintendo. Where as a Donkey Kong game would be stuck as a Nintendo exclusive, Conker is free to travel as he pleases. Obviously, this remains irrelevant as long as Rare remains a 2nd party developer – however, it is hard to ignore the rumors and even harder to ignore Nintendo’s wishy washy E3 responses regarding their status with Rare. So if, and if, Rare ever becomes a 3rd party developer, there are two rival camps that each have a large amount of money to put on the table. Greenbacks are enticing, and an exclusive like Conker would certainly be huge for either.

I’d hate to try to make some prophetic decree, but this is it: Conker is as good as a Sony or Microsoft exclusive…if he hasn’t already been killed. Obviously, this will only make his bad fur day worse…but we don’t need to warn him.
