A Call To Organize

If you don’t value pride, it might be a good idea for you to quit reading right now. I value pride. Part of my pride comes in Nintendo smashing Sony, or so we hope in the future. Now… Why should I care if one company succeeds over another? Really, I probably shouldn’t; since I have no financial ties to either. However, it’s a matter of principle; and the principle that Nintendo has always been in the industry to bring quality games to the public, whereas Sony increasingly appears to be looking to salvage an opportunity to earn a quick buck. Yet again though, I’m not going to even attempt to prove Nintendo is more into this for the consumer than Sony is. I’ll simply point you to a fine editorial by Eric Mattei at Nintendojo if that’s what you’re craving right now.
Ok then. That out of the way, lets get back to this ‘pride’ thing for a moment. So the morning of Friday, October 27th comes, and I read an article in the local St. Paul Pioneer Press newspaper...
Determined consumers appear to have cleaned out local stores of the much-anticipated videogame console this morning after lining up overnight in a persistent drizzle to ensure they wouldn't go home empty-handed.
At sunrise, more than 400 people waited outside the Roseville Best Buy store even though the store had only 126 of the devices in stock. Most had to settle for game discounts and a multimedia presentation.
Pride. These so-called Sony enthusiasts are surely thinking right now “we’re the most diehard gamers around, and Playstation2 is the only system worth waiting outside of a store overnight for.” Although they’re likely wrong on both accounts, I am certain they’re wrong about PS2 being the only console worth wasting a night away waiting for.
So, with this said, I think it is high time somebody ponders the idea of Nintendo fans uniting and arriving at stores 24-48 hours before Gamecube’s launch, setting up camp, and making sure that the media is aware of the fact gamers are turning out in droves to ensure owning this system. Naturally, if PS2 buyers were arriving at stores 12 hours early for their beloved PS2, we as Nintendo gamers, and our natural superiority and highly evolved sense of decision making and dedication, should be able to pull off 24-48 hours early; no problem. Essentially, it would be our time to show up the legions of PS2 fans and bandwagon jumpers.
I have nothing wrong at all with people that enjoy Playstation games – that’s fine and dandy – and I feel no emotional trauma in stating that there are good games on Playstation; but likewise, I’m a product of my environments. From my own experiences, the typical Playstation gamer looks at Nintendo and says “they suck because they ’re a kiddie company that produces too many immature games,” all while playing a gore filled playstation game that lacks any substance. How nice, I’ll just stick to my own definition of mature; one that looks at substance over cheap flashes and thrills.
"That's just wrong,'' said Johnson of the PlayStation2 shortfall, due partly to component shortages that forced Sony to initially ship to the United States this week only half of the million units it had earlier promised. "Why do they promote it (so heavily) when they only have a certain number to (sell)? That's garbage. And Christmas is just around the corner.''
“But Mike, what about the likely fact that I will be able to go to the store on the day of Gamecube’s release and casually buy one without troubles?” says a voice from the crowd of onlookers. Well… That might be true, but the fact is meaningless. Nintendo has had times when they’ve experienced shortages, and other circumstances when they’ve warned of shortages that never prosper… However, returning to yet another word – this time being‘principle’ – the principle of rallying behind Gamecube’s launch is to create our own hype for the console.
The single thought of the media garbling up this PS2 hype and making the console seem like a Godsend is laughable to me – and thinking out loud – how about a Gamecube revolution featuring loyalty unparalleled to any previous gaming console launch? Why not?
