Editorials   Retroid Premiere!
- By Daniel Maraglio [Senior Editor]

For those of us that have been there with Nintendo since the NES days, we have fond memories of the games that gave us so much enjoyment. But what about the advertising that accompanied those games? Retroid will be a look back into the older days of gaming through old commercials and advertisements. Since I decided to name this section retroid, its only fitting to first take a look at a commercial for the very first Metroid.

After scrounging around some old videos I came across this old metroid commercial which after looking at closely, had some weird stuff going on. Mostly in one scene. The first thing you notice is that the boy playing the game is also IN the game, playing the role of Samus.

SAMUS BOY! Im not sure of this was meant to show that he was really into this game or just the fact that Nintendo didnt want kids to know that Samus was a woman before buying the game, which I think was a smart move since some of the kids back in the day would never buy a game with a female lead character. But anyway the action scenes show the conversion of game footage to scenes of the boy jumping around in some lame space suit.

SPACE SUIT JUMP!
So anyway in the final live action scene, the guy jumps onto some platform made to look like the ones in Metroid and it is obviously not very sturdy. The first thing you notice that right at the end of the clip, you can see the guy stick his hands out meaning he is falling, the next thing you can see on the far right in the darkness, a hand is there waiting to catch him.

PLATFORM FALL W/ HAND ACTION It might be hard to see in the snap I took of it. I also included a zipped movie file of the commercial which I had to downsample since my web hosting is free and only allows files up to 1MB in size.
