15May01, 10:30am: “Flight Fun”
Ah, it’s about time to be on my way to Los Angeles, yesterday seemed to take so long! In each and every class at school, the clock seemed to be moving half the speed of normal. Seriously, it was one long day. And to top it off, my baseball game after school went forever too! We won 16-13, but regardless, it was a loooong game in 90-degree heat. I wore a long sleeve undershirt in the game – wow I’m so smart. Oh well, it all went well; I went two for three with three walks.
Last night, we all were going to have an 8pm CT chat online to discuss our E3 plans and make sure we all were on the same page, know when to expect eachother in our hotel, and other stuff. But thanks to my baseball game lasting until 7:30 and my needing to go to Best Buy to pick up some batteries and blank cassettes to use in interviews, I didn’t get to take part in it. Now I’m left with some questions… I know Andrew’s flight is at 5pm ET, and Tariq, Cory, and Rob’s are mid-afternoon, but I really don’t know when the other guys will be getting to our hotel.
This will be such a cool experience! After all this time, I will be meeting many of the staffers for the first time! Ah, the memories of how I met Andrew at last E3…
Thanks to the AP US History test, Tariq and I didn’t go to Los Angeles until Friday night, and thus, we were going to make it only to the third day of the show, Saturday. Upon the flight’s arrival in Los Angeles, we both got to our hotel rooms at 7:30. Tariq, his dad, and myself rode a taxi to the hotel that the IGN crew was staying at for an IGN Affiliate’s party. We knew Andrew was going to be going to it, and this offered our first opportunity to meet him. I remember walking into the room, and almost immediately picking out a guy that I thought resembled the picture of Andrew he sent me from his drivers’ license.
“Is that Andrew?” I asked Tariq.
“I think so,” he replied.
We stood there for a good minute before deciding to go approach him and ask him his name. Finally, we made our way to him, and by the time we were asking him his name, it was apparent he was Andrew thanks to the N64Shooters.com shirt he was wearing. We talked briefly and then he threw some N64Shooters.com shirts our way, which we promptly changed into. The rest of that party we spent listening to Andrew telling us what to expect in our first day at the show, and met a lot of people from other sites. It was really cool finally being able to put a face and voice to some of the people whose site’s I read every day – such as Jonathon, Drew, Nathan of Nintendorks, and Noah and MSTiesAnon (now know as Nathan Heckle) of Nintendojo. Hearing the insane ramblings of Jonathon on the Mario vs. Zelda issue was great fun too.
Anyway, enough with the nostalgia, I can’t wait to meet a lot of the rest of the staff at this year’s show: Rob, Cory, Joe, and Travis will all be people I’ll finally get to meet for the first time, and I look forward to every minute with the guys that have put a lot of time into making N64Shooters.com, Nshooters.com, and now Ngenres.com into the website it is. Unfortunately, Brett Fulesday, who originally was going to be coming to the show, had to cancel at the last moment due to certain circumstances. I will miss his presence a lot; we’ve had a lot of great conversations online and I was really looking forward to seeing him in person.
It remains to be seen who’ll be the best at multiplayer matches. While smart money says I will prove supreme because “I’m all about the W,” there should be some really good matches in our hotel rooms. I know Joe has achieved the Perfect rating in PD, he should be some good competition. Andrew and I have talked enough Mario Tennis smack to eachother online that those matches should be quite the draw, too. And judging by the AIM profiles Rob has had bragging of his Smash Brothers, PD, and Soul Caliber records against his roommates, he should provide more strong competition. Having smacked Tariq around at every game on the Earth already, I know he will bow to me! Heheh, I’ll take him as my doubles partner in Mario Tennis any day though – with him in the front and me on the baseline, we’re a dynamic duo.
Nothing like a little turbulence to type to while on this flight… An hour into it, and up until now, everything was fine. Ah, this flight has been great though, I’m sitting in the exit row seat. Lots of leg room, baby!
“Later on, when you’re done typing, can you go check KSTP.com for me?”
“Umm… No mom, I can’t exactly go online on the airplane.”
“Oh yeah, I’m sorry, I’m not thinking.”
It’s all right though; she went through a lot today. While in the airport when we were waiting for our flight, she learned that the co-worker at her work – whom she has sat next to for five years – and that lady’s husband, had both been killed in an apparent homicide. The newspaper article with the header “Bloomington couple found dead” was a cold dose of one of the most difficult things to deal with in life – death. My mom questioned whether she should even come on this trip any more, as she should, since life issues like this often take precedence over what else is happening. However, hopefully this little trip will be good for her and let her mind escape a little bit. I think her co-worker would want her to continue on in the trip to Los Angeles if she were still here on Earth. Godspeed to everyone involved.
On that somber note, more to come later, it’s time for an **exquisite** airplane lunch of a ham and cheese sandwich, nacho cheese dorito chips, and coke. The Doritos nacho cheese chip bag seems like it has about 5 chips in it total!
