News   Resident Evil Impressions
- Posted By Ryan Eid, 05.02.2002

Never having played the original Resident Evil, but being a big fan of the series, you can bet my anticipation for this game was high. So, having ripped off the plastic (and being too excited, almost ripped off the plastic casing of the actual case) I eagerly popped my new resident Evil into my dusty ol' GameCube.

The game only takes 8 blocks to save, so I was in luck. A few warnings about how this game is graphically violent pop up, and before I know it, I'm watching the sweet, malicious FMV intro. The voice acting had changed from the original, but still retained its cheesy, B-movie feel to it.

And, I kid you not, as the camera panned out and I was about to play for real, I was stunned that I wasn't still in an FMV. The real-time game looks THAT good. The one complaint I would have are sudden stutters in animation when going through real-time cutscenes. Inexplicable, really. But hardly noticeable, when you consider this is quite possibly one of the greatest looking games of all time.

Controls are still, well, Resident Evil. You either hate them or tolerate them. Personally I don't mind them too much, it does take some getting used to though, and those of you who've never played an RE game before may be baffled when you first try to control Jill or Chris.

The entire point of the game is to, well, survive the horror that resides in this enormous mansion you and your STARS team members now find yourselves in. Ammo is more rare than a quality Titus game, and you only have certain amount of spaces to carry items. Oh, and did I mention ink ribbons are seemingly non-existant? Which makes for some more strategy, you have to know when to save, and when you should just bypass a typewriter altogether.

A nice feature Capcom added to help you take care of the zombies is a "secondary weapon", which, when in close combat with a monster, you can use to knock them back. It should prove to come in handy later on in the game, no doubt.

I've only just begun, but already I can feel how intense this game gets. My suggestion is to definately play it with the lights out, alone, if at all possible. This is one scary game, let me tell you. But at the same time, I can't put it down. You're always afraid to look around that next corner, but something drives you to do so.

Hopefully I will have a full review sometime next week. But so far, Resident Evil is a must-own GameCube game.
