Preview Resident Evil 0
- By Ryan Eid [Senior Editor]
Preview Update: 3/22/02
Resident Evil 0 is moving along nicely, according to sources. The game is slated for a late October/early November release date, and is looking beautiful.
RE0 allows the player to switch between two charcaters, Rebecca Chambers, and the new kid on the block, an ex Navy Sealer named Billy Cohen. Depending on the situation, players will swap betwen the characters. Another big difference to previous RE games is that gamers can now supposedly drop items at their leisure and pick them up when necessary (which would make sense, considering there is rumored to be no item box).
The graphics are reportedly stunning, looking better than even the RE1 remake that Capcom has recently completed. The game mixes real-time graphics, with pre-rendered backgrounds and FMV cutscenes. This is a big title for Capcom and is definately one Nintendo fans should look for this fall. More info as it becomes available.

What's better than having a great port of one of the best survival horror games ever onto Nintendo 64? Having a brand new one on GameCube! Currently named Resident Evil 0, this game, developed by Flagship, is said to take place BEFORE RE1 on PSX (hence the "0").
This latest Resident Evil adventure stars Rebecca Chambers, from the original Resident Evil, and S.T.A.R.S. team rookie member. Very little is known about the title, but what is known is that the item box will not be used in this game (damn them!), and the game will begin on a train. The game has a very original storyline, one that is said to be much different from the past few REs. Unlike Resident Evil 2 for N64, RE0 apparently won't allow you to use the analog stick, but rather the player must use the DPad. Fret not though, the 180 degree turn is still fully in tact.
The graphics are a mystery at this point, although you can probably expect the quality of at least CODE Veronic on the Dreamcast, and probably well beyond even that. Right now though, nothing is known about the graphics, sounds, or music.
Yoshiki Okamoto, the series producer, said that the game will tie up loose ends of the series. "I wanted to unravel some of the unsolved mysteries, such as the existence of Umbrella, how the Bravo team was wiped out, and a couple of more others that weren't resolved." He also said this would be the most difficult game in the series, a welcome challenge to RE veterans. Unfortunaely, while there will most likely be more than one player to be utilized in the game, there will be no "zapping system", like the one in RE2 and Code Veronica for the Dreamcast.
Instead of the original N64 release for the game, Capcom has decided to port it over to the GameCube and make it a launch title for Nintendo's upcoming console. Not a bad idea for both Capcom and Nintendo considering the game will likely sell better in Japan if on the GCN (the N64 is dead there), and it will help Nintendo initially sell systems. It makes the most sense for both sides if this were the case, and that is apparently what has happend. What does this move mean for the game? It should mean fully polygonal 3D backdrops (ala Code Veronica), full FMV, and maybe even another playable character.
It seems great that Capcom would release a Resident Evil game on a new system that will undoubtedly help out initial sales, seeing as the immense popularity of Biohazard in Japan and Resident Evil in the US. I think this shows Capcom finally has trust in Nintendo again, and hopefully Nintendo and their fans will prove Capcom right.
