Preview  Thornado
- By Ryan Eid [Senior Editor]

Announced way back in the days of the N64, Thornado has gotten an overhaul, and is now primed to hit Nintendo's GameCube this fall. The game, being developed by Factor 5 (the folks behind Rogue Squadron on the N64) is still in its early stages, but is looking promising.

Thornado is a blended 3-D action/shooter with some adventure elements thrown in, much like Nintendo's own Metroid, or Konami's Contra. It's also heavily influenced by the SNES game Turrican; in fact Factor 5 tried to reach an agreement with Rainbow Arts, the publisher of Turrican in order to keep the name, but couldn't. The game is based on a player utilizing "wind weapons" in order to "blow the house down" so to speak. You travel across various levels (which range from here on earth to outer space), blowing away enemies and obstacles in your path. There are also grappling weapons for the player to jump over chasms and such (very Metroid-esque). Plus, while details on this are sketchy, there IS a co-op mode of sorts in the planning process.

The game's graphical power is still unknown, but considering the great job Factor 5 did with Rogue Squadron on the N64, we could be in for a real treat. On the right you can see a few character sketches from the game. Also, since Factor 5 is in fact the all-great sound guru of gaming (they even helped develop GCN's sound card) expect a great musical score as well.

In the end, Thornado seems to be building itself up to being a futuristic 3-D shooter, with an array of weapons, interesting enemies, and an intertwining of some exploration elements. We will hopefully find out more about this game at E3 in just a few short weeks.
