Preview  Duke Nukem Forever
- By Ryan Eid [Senior Editor]

He's back. The king of gaming badass is back, courtesy of Take 2 Interactive. Duke Nukem Forever for GameCube, which is based almost entirely off of the PC game by the same name, stars everyone favorite ass kicker in some familiar settings. The game begins in Nevada where Duke has to save the world from cyborg/aliens trying to turn humans into flesh-eating monsters. Duke travels to Area 51, where he finds Dr. Proton is the one behind all of this madness. Sound familiar? It should. It is your typical "Duke saves the world and gets the hot chicks" plot, but then again, the Duke series was never story-heavy anyway.

Not much is known about gameplay aspects of the title, but 3D Realms (the developer behind the PC version) insists that this will be the best, most advanced Duke yet. They will not release it until it's ready, which may not be for up to another year. But when it does hit you can expect all-new weaponry, gadgets, enemies, and even puzzles.

The one thing that catches your attention though is the sheer scope of this game. 3D Realms is almost recreating Las Vegas into full digital form. The city is enormous, with several places to hang out, look around, and enjoy (strip joints, etc.). Other then Las Vegas, there's also Area 51, the Grand Canyon, and the Hoover Dam. Rest assured this game will be huge in scale.

Another new feature to the Duke Nukem series will be the ability to control several different vehicles. Duke will be able to ride in Harley's, jet-skis, and even fighter jets to help him aid in his adventure. The vehicles will all handle differently, and react accordingly with Duke's movement. In keeping with this theory, 3D Realms is forming the environment to be almost completely interactive. Meaning if you fire a rocket into the side of a building, you'll see the hole it leaves. And it you take out that automatic and start firing away at some glass, it'll shatter into pieces.

Yes, it is another Duke game. But it looks to be more then JUST another Duke game. Forever seems to improve on the original formula that has made Duke such a hit across the PC and home platforms. The title is still a ways off though, and GameCube owners probably won't see it until fall of 2002. Note: All screenshots and information are taken from the PC version, as the GameCube version will reportedly be an exact port, or at least close to it.
