Preview  Kaisertal
- By Mike Schneider [Editor In Chief]

Ahh, the memories. Raise your hand if you remember the day a top-down shooter was considered to be state-of-the-art. Formula, the people behind Kaisertal, is hoping to capture the essence of the genre and lure back many jaded, old-school gamers with this game that focuses on jagged action over wowing 3D effects.

That’s not to say the graphics aren’t beautiful though. Formula is doing some impressive things, such as sprite rotational features in enemies as they come swooping towards you. Other graphical effects include varying weather conditions, and day/night progression. We can expect that enemies will be more difficult to see at night, and other gameplay variances resulting from weather differences.

The game pits you as one of the last hopes for the Alpha Necronis Solar system, as you’ll be fighting off the Swarm, a pillaging extraterrestrial force terrorizing the cosmos. Thanks to the GBA’s linking capabilities, you won’t have to go at saving the universe alone, provided you have friends available to help lend a hand. It hasn’t been confirmed whether more than one bud can go at it with you, but we’re thinking it’s pretty safe to say only one more ally will be allowed so that the screen doesn’t get overly congested. Co-opp on a handheld shooter such as this hasn’t been done in a long time, and it is this feature that should help distinguish Kaisertal as a premiere shooting game.

As of right now, the most daunting task left for Formula, it seems, is to find a publisher for the game. Hopefully that will come sooner than later, since it’d be a real shame if Kaisertal never sees the light of day.
