Preview  Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
- By Joe Mackie [Associate Editor]

Capcom’s recent announcement about Resident Evil becoming a GCN exclusive shocked the gaming industry. Resident Evil will be exclusive to a “kiddy” system? Not only will future Resident Evil’s be exclusive, but Capcom has also decided to re-release all previous titles in the series, thankfully minus the dreadfully bad Gun Survivor.

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is the most action-oriented game in the series. It’s really just a quick subplot in the Resident Evil time line; it takes place over a few hours right after Resident Evil 1. Players control Jill Valentine, who has just resigned from the Raccoon City S.T.A.R.S. police team, and is now trying to flee the city. Unfortunately, this is Raccoon City. Zombies, mutants, giant spiders and more litter the area.

The creature that makes Resident Evil 3 so different from the rest of the series, however, is the towering hulk known only as Nemesis. This monstrosity, equipped with a rocket launcher, pursues Jill throughout the entire title. Unlike all other creatures in the Resident Evil universe, Nemesis can go through doors. This makes for some very tense chase scenes.

Not much has been said about the GCN version of the game, other than that it simply exists. Unlike Resident Evil 1, which is going to be completely overhauled to take full advantage of the GCN hardware, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is a simple port. Hopefully, they’ll do a better job with the port than they did with the Dreamcast version, which looked only marginally better than the original Playstation game. With that said, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is a great title in the series and I welcome its addition to the Gamecube library. More as it’s made available.
