Preview  Resident Evil 2 [GCN]
- By Ryan Eid [Senior Editor]

If you own a Dreamcast, PlayStation, or N64, chances are you've played (or at least heard of) Resident Evil 2. Yes, this is one game that sure does get around the block. But if by some miracle of night you haven't played this classic survival-horror title, Capcom is bringing it home to the Nintendo GameCube sometime next year.

Unfortunately though, unlike Resident Evil 1, RE2 will not be completely redone to take advantage of Nintendo's new powerhouse machine. Instead, it will be a straight port of the PC/DC version, and probably won't look much better graphically then those two versions (which were basically high resolution copies of the original PSX game).

The story goes something like this: The Umbrella Corporation had been doing chemical experiments, "accidentally" creating this odd virus that transformed human to zombie. Luckily the S. T. A. R. S. Team contained the virus, ridding Raccoon City. Unfortunately no one believed Umbrella was behind the outbreak, and the STARS team had to go looking for evidence. Well, the zombies are back for some reason, and this time you control either Leon, a rookie cop, or Claire, Chris Redfield's (RE1 star) sister. The two meet up, and are suddenly split up when a truck tries to ram them.

The gameplay is what you'd expect from any Resident Evil title; lots of thrills, fixed camera positions, and bad voice acting. And although RE2 was a very good game for its time, it has been much improved upon since its release nearly four years ago. Suffice to say, if you've played any of the other versions of this game at some time in the past, Capcom probably isn't going to do enough for you to warrant a purchase of it again. But if you have actually never played it, but always wanted to, the GameCube version may be the one you want to wait for. There's no set release date yet, but a third/fourth quarter 2002 release is likely.
