Preview  Resident Evil Code: Veronica
- By Joe Mackie [Associate Editor]

Code: Veronica is arguably the best game in the Resident Evil series, and now it’s on its way to Gamecube. The title was originally released on the Dreamcast in 2000 and was then ported to the PS2 this past August. It’s a great title that no gamer should miss.

Claire Redfield is the heroine this time; she’s looking for her brother Chris. The S.T.A.R.S. team, Chris included, has been sent to Europe to discover what’s really going on inside Umbrella. With this bit of information, Claire heads to France in search of Chris. Unfortunately, she finds trouble with some Umbrella agents instead. This results in a most impressive pre-rendered scene, after which Claire is captured and sent to a mysterious prison island. With the help of a sympathetic guard, she escapes from her cell and the adventure begins.

While the storyline may be the highlight of the series, Code: Veronica is also quite nice to look at. For the first time in a Resident Evil game, the backgrounds are not pre-rendered. Camera angles are still pre-determined, of course, but they move with you a bit. This helps to cut down on the frequency of being attacked by creatures off screen. The environments and monsters looked great on the Dreamcast; they’ll look even better on the Gamecube.

In addition to enhanced graphics, expect all the features included in Code: Veronica X for the PS2. This included an extra 10 minutes or so of additional pre-rendered scenes and a non-interactive report on the history of Resident Evil. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some Gamecube exclusive features, too. We’ll have more info on the Gamecube version as soon as it’s known.
