Preview  Cel Damage
- By Joe Mackie [Associate Editor]

The car combat genre has grown fairly stale over the years, but Pseudo Interactive is attempting to breathe new life into it with Cel Damage. This cartooney combat game takes full advantage of the Gamecube’s powerful toon shading abilities, allowing for a truly animated look. Like other games in the genre, Cel Damage is all about blowing stuff up. There’s no storyline to get in the way of the action. Cel Damage does have a few unique features, however.

For starters, there are a whopping 36 weapons. These include axes, bazookas, crossbows, bats, rockets, hammers, radioactive oil drums, shrink rays, swords, chainsaws, and just about every other type of weapon known to man. Cel Damage also features 12 arenas, with themes ranging from haunted houses to the Wild West. These very large arenas are riddled with power ups, shortcuts and secrets. Unfortunately, the game is said to feature only six characters. Hopefully there will be lots of extra hidden ones.

Unlike Twisted Metal of Vigilante 8, Cel Damage is not a last man standing game. Scoring is much more like that in Quake 3 Arena or Unreal Tournament, in which you’re given a certain amount of points for each kill. Everyone is given unlimited continues; play stops when someone reaches a certain point total or a timer has elapsed. There’s also a capture the flag mode and a standard race mode, should deathmatch become tiresome. All of these modes will, of course, support 4 players.

Cel Damage looks to be a great party game, but it still remains to be seen if it can offer a compelling solo mode. We’ll let you know right here at NShooters shortly after the game is released this winter.
