At E3, we spoke to EA product marketing manager Don Mesa about the upcoming Bond title, 007 Nightfire.
Coming November 15, alongside the newest Bond flick, to Gamecube, PS2, Xbox, and PC, 007 Nightfire follows an original plot as put together by EA and MGM Studios.
Nintendo fans put a lot of stake in the Bond series, and Mesa knows there’s a reputation. "We have to live up to the Bond legacy because this year is the 40th anniversary of James Bond."
While living up to Nintendo 64’s Goldeneye 007 legacy would have been a little more substantial, it’s still good to see that EA is setting its sites high.
Armed with a slew of upgradable gadgets like the briefcase that turns into a turret gun before being combined with yet another item, James Bond will travel the globe, battling with sharks, racing the streets, scaling Tokyo skyscrapers, defeating the Austrian Alps, heading into zero-gravity outer space, and more.
With the espionage part cornered, it’s only fair that Bond turn next to his other favorite pastime.
The ladies.
Throughout the game, girls will be flirting with Bond. After all – he’s Bond! In one scene, Bond’s old girlfriend had a few choice words for his new date and there was tension in the air. Bond played it cool, adjusting his cuffs and tie.
Of course it’s not all fun and games, but savvy players can still get away with less harm and more time for the ladies. On one level, Bond’s challenge is infiltrating an enemy base. There are multiple paths to the inside, and Mesa demonstrated the stealthiest.
Leaping off a bridge, Mesa landed Bond in the bed of a pickup truck where he was able to get all the way to the gates undetected. More brazen players would have been met with a barrage of firepower.
Once inside the building, crisp graphics, the absence of load times, and the promise of stronger AI left us happy as the demonstration ended.
With 20 mutli and single player levels, 007 Nightfire has a lot to live up to this Fall.
