Review  Medal of Honor: Infiltrator
- By Daniel Maraglio  [Senior Editor]

A few years back, the Medal of Honor series extended its reach to the gameboy advance system. The result was a total disaster. A first person shooter with visuals and textures that were so awful, the game was literally unplayable. Learning from this mistake. The developers of Medal of Honor: Infiltrator have taken a totally new approach to the next GBA title, and it wont dissapoint.

Gameplay:

Now only partially a first person shooter, Medal of Honor: Infiltrator take the action from an overhead perspective. There are some first person shooting levels, but these are fixed camera games. These play like the old arcade classic "Operation Wolf". There are several settings for this mode like defending a battleship, holding an airstrip and even tail gunning from a bomber at incoming enemy fighters.

The overhead missions are the main part of this game. This mode feels like a mixture of Metal Gear and Commando and plays exceptionally well with a solid presentation. Some missions require you to be stealthy which will make things alot easier, while other situations have you running and gunning. Even with the simple graphics system, the MOH:Infiltrator makes a nice presentation with all the cool things you can do. Holding the R button allows you to walk slowly with your weapon ready which also makes you strafe. Its a great ability that you will use nearly all the time. You have four selectable weapons kits that can be found inside bunkers. A Thompson, BAR, M1 Garand, Colt 45, Bazooka, Grenades and Dynamite make a very well rounded assortment and are all useful depending on the situation. MG-42 installations and enemy tanks can also be stolen and used to take out tough enemies or even buildings. The difficuly of the game is actually a very smooth ride, providing a good challenge as your shooting and stealth skills improve.
As an extra bonus, you can link up Ifiltrator to your gamecube and it becomes a real time map as you play MOH: Rising Sun which is really helpful.

Aesthetics:
For such small characters and buildings, they sure did fit in alot of detail. They arent anything spectacular but the game does have a nice graphics package. The areas you fight through dont always look the same and have quite a bit of diversity to them. The enemies are all detailed to the point that you can tell apart SS troops, grenadiers, snipers, officers and plenty more. One of my favorite moments is tailgunning in first person mode. Enemy planes slowly come into view from the blue cloudy sky and scale and rotate. They almost look like real 3-D Models. The best part about the graphics are the FMV clips of actual WW2 footage. Between each level you can see a 10-15 second video clip that has pretty nice quality on the small screen. Nice quality considering they were recorded about 60 years ago.

Sound:
A mixture of tunes from Medal of Honor: Frontine and some new music. They all sound great and really take advantage of the GBA hardware. Music usually takes a backseat to graphics and gameplay in GBA titles, but MOH makes it just as important as its console counterparts. Weapons sound authentic, even including the "ping" of the Garand running out of ammo. Theres also some high quality voice clips. German and English speech occurs regularly during gameplay and sounds like its actually coming from the characters.

Control:
I had a little trouble with some aspects of controlling the game at first but quickly adjusted to them. When you are surrounded or flanked, you will want to turn towards the enemy and strafe so you can walk backwards and shoot while retreating. The problem was that when I wanted to strafe, I would somtimes face the wrong direction and have to re-adjust myself. This got me shot up quite a few times and still occurs once in a while. Its still a good system and works well most of the time, especially if you have died once and you know where to expect the enemy to come from the second time around. Switching between your Gun and grenades takes only a tap of the B button and the longer the A button is held down, the farther you toss them. It works really well and grenades are important for taking out hard to reach enemies.

Multiplayer:
A Co-Op mode and death match mode are included for 2 players. The co-op missions were dissapointing since they only consisted of the first person shooting levels with extra enemies. It would have been cool to play through the whole game with a friend. Still fun, but could have been more to it. The deathmatch mode is played in the overhead view with six different maps but only allows 1 on 1 matches. Four player team matches would have been excellent.

OVERALL:
With an excellent presentation and great gameplay, you wont be dissapointed with this new take on MOH. It provides a good challenge with lots of neat extras like video footage and multiplayer and survival modes. If your a fan of classic shooters or Medal of Honor, give this one a try. Some may find it a bit too short as it only has 15 or so single player levels. A very good effort at putting MOH on the small screen.
