Review Wario World
- By Daniel Maraglio
[Senior Editor]
Wario has been my favorite Nintendo character since shortly after his appearance in Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins. His popularity has exploded and now he has his own line of games to compete with that goody two shoes, Mario. He even has a side kick named Waluigi to help him keep tabs on that goofy Luigi. Everyone knows what Wario is about. He loves money (he even eats it in this game!), he likes to beat up on his enemies and he has a big belly to back up his bad attitude, and what an outfit! Wario's lastest adventure, developed by "Treasure" is another treasure hunt, but this time thing are done so much better that Wario World is his best game ever (besides Wario Ware Inc).
Gameplay:
After many treasure hunts, Wario has taken his fortune and built a castle around it. Unknown to him, a particular piece of his horde in the form of a black jewel, has started to turn all of his booty into monsters and turned the castle into a twisted alternate world. Wario's only option is to crush his enemy and re-collect all his treasures while rescuing some forest pixies on the way. Wario has some cool moves to use to get the job done. After punching or dashing into a monster. Wario can pick him up and then either give him a toss, spin him around and use them as a weapon, or perform a spinning piledriver with destructive force. Anyone who was turned away by the more puzzle oriented play of the gameboy wario titles will be relieved by the fact that Wario World is focused on action and is a very fun game to play. Warios lost treasure has been spread into four different worlds. Each world has two levels with bosses at the end of each and a third level which is a big boss battle. This may seem short and it is, but while the game is short, the levels are all pretty large and will take even longer to complete if you want to find all of Wario's stuff along with rescuing pixies and collecting special jewels that allow him to open the exit. Each level also has eight pieces of a golden statue and when all are found, Wario gets some extra energy. While finding all this stuff may sound like a chore, its actually alot of fun. Scattered on every level there are a bunch of doors that Wario must use his "Butt Drop" to get into. Inside these doors are strange worlds that hold the red jewels he needs. Some are small rooms with some kind of puzzle to solve and other are huge platform jumping tests. While some can be tough to beat, they were all alot of fun and never got me irate. Besides collecting stuff, Wario also has to contend with all of those bosses. Each battle was very enjoyable and only one boss (some stupid flying baby) was annoying and seemed cheap. Wario World's difficulty was another hangup. The game itself is actually a pretty good challenge, and if Wario bites it, he can pay some coins to continue right where he left off. The problem is, you have so many coins that I never really worried about losing so many that I wouldnt be able to continue, and in the alternate worlds, falling just means starting the mini-area over. Theres not really any way to lose in this game. The true challenge is finding all the items and theres a nice reward for finding all the items in each set. As a bonus, finding all the treasures in each stage unlocks the ability to download more and more mini games from Wario Ware Inc from your Gamecube into your GBA, but if you already own Wario Ware, you wont find anything new here.
Aesthetics:
While it isnt a groundbreaking graphics system, Wario World is a great looking game with every world looking totally different than the last. It runs at 60 FPS and I encountered slowdown on only one or two occasions for a few seconds. The enemies are hilarious, like the baby dinosaur in his pajamas that tries to wack you with a big rattle, or the first worlds boss, a giant lizard wearing a thong. Overall the graphics are perfect for this game and Wario is well represented.
Sound:
Another shining point. The music fits the game well and sounds great, and Wario makes plenty of noise. He screams insults at his enemies as he throws them around and his laugh is contagious. Sound effects are also top notch, like when Wario wraps his body around a "glue globe" and crawls around on it, not only the sight, but the sound of this will always get a laugh.
Control:
In a word: Flawless. Controlling Wario World is one of my best experiences with a platformer, ever. All of his moves are easy to peform and difficult platforming sections are actually fun with such a great control system. I am hard pressed to remember a time when falling off a platform didnt feel like it was my own error. You cant blame anything on "faulty controller". This is one of the games best features.
OVERALL:
A great game that will appeal to everyone in all age groups. Little kids will have a great time playing through the game and older players will be challenged to find all the treasures and secrets, and EVERYONE will love the sideshow that is Wario through the whole thing. Seeing his jaw drop down to the bottom of his stomach to inhale coins is a sight to behold. My only problem is that Wario World left me wanting more.
