Review  Super Ghouls N' Ghosts
- By Daniel Maraglio  [Senior Editor]

Back in 1991, Capcom released Super Ghouls N' Ghosts for the SNES and the game was an instant classic. I have fond memories of playing through this game and overcoming all the challenges it threw my way. The G+G series has always been touted as one of the best challenges that a video game could offer, perhaps too challenging. Now the SNES classic has been given a GBA style makeover.

Gameplay:

The brave Knight Arthur has freed his kingdom from Satan's evil grasp and saved the princess on a few occasions, but now a new enemy has appeared and kidnapped the Princess and Arthur must again travel through the haunted countryside to defeat the bad guys and save the girl.
Super Ghouls N' Ghosts is a near perfect port of the Snes game, but with quite a few added bonuses. Mainly, the "new" secret levels added into the game. These new levels are actually taken from other G+G games on the Nes, Genesis and Arcade. They are unlocked by beating certain stages with special armor equipped. Other new additions are new monsters and some redesigned graphics.
As mentioned before, these games are known for immense challenge, sometimes too much challenge. Back In 1991, it was acceptable to sit with a game like this for hours, trying to get past obstacles over and over. In this day, its not that much fun anymore and can get quite annoying and repetitive. The game has an easy mode, but unfortunately you can only select it in the original Super Ghouls N' Ghosts mode which has none of the new features. It takes alot of experience, skill, trial and error and luck to complete the game itself on normal mode, let alone unlock secret levels.
Besides this overwhelming challenge, there is a great game to be played here.

Aesthetics:
Besides some slowdown this is a 16-bit, 2-D graphics masterpiece. The original levels still look great with some early Snes special effects. All the worlds keep their dark mood and yet they are very colorful and well lit. Monsters are all great looking, especially the huge boss monsters. All but one of the secret levels have been graphically updated to match the GBA technology, making them look even better than the snes levels.

Sound:
A wonderful port of all the sounds and music from the original. Nearly everything sounds just like it did 12 years ago. The music has a very catchy (but not annoying) and memorable beat and the sound effects are all great as well. This is the kind of music that I still find myself whistling now and then.

Control:
Great responsive controls. Anything less would be unacceptable for such a challenging game. Arthur's double jump is a great ability that helps the tricky platforming jumps. No problems with this one.

OVERALL:
This is a great game for fans of the series and newcomers, looking for an old school challenge. The great "state of the art" graphics still hold up as far as 2-D goes. To unlock some of the bonuses you will have to spend some serious time with this game and alot of today's gamers just wont have the patience for that. Its fun to relive the classic gameplay for a while, but it did tend to get boring after beating it two times.
