Star Fox is sure to be a game that is forever etched in the minds of many Super Nintendo gamers. The graphics, controls, sound, and gameplay were all revolutionary at the time. Finally, we can play the long overdue sequel to Star Fox, which attempts to once again raise the bar in flight shooters.
Aesthetics:
Very well done, simply put. For a first generation game, these graphics are high quality. Levels, as well as all vehicles, are done with bright colors, giving a good overall impression. In multiplayer, they're much more simplistic, however.
Crafts are all animated fluently, and the almost cartoony appearance of explosions is right-on in helping to create the Star Fox universe.
Control:
Star Fox has excellent controls that are very easy to learn and get used to. The game offers all the standards; shoot, burst, break, as well as some other moves such as pulling a u-turn. Doing every control option in the game is very easy. Naturally, being an expert pilot and mastering the control scheme is crucial during certain parts of the mission, and pulling u-turns at the right moment is very rewarding.
Sound:
The music fits the mood of the level nicely, and there's a ton of voice. The 4 main characters each have a lot of different things they say, even though certain voices (cough... Slippy... cough) are kind of annoying. But, in a way, certain annoyances in sounds are a plus, since Nintendo wanted you portray certain characters (Slippy) as annoyances. A good all around effort.
Gameplay:
The one player quest offers multiple paths, but, all of them are too short and easy to make it through. But, the challenge in the game lies in getting medals for levels, which opens up more multiplayer extras. And, the addition of the tank in a few levels was cool, since it adds more variety. The tank for multiplayer is one award for getting all medals in the one player, and believe me, it is VERY tough to get all the medals. A different gripe I have is that you can't save the one player game at all, so you have to do it all in one sitting (1-2 hours).
Multiplayer:
While not up to par with 007, Star Fox offers a fun multiplayer mode. There's the regular dog fights, or you can add a bunch of mindless computer opponents that fly around without shooting, having a contest to see who can rack up more kills. That last mode is definitely the more fun of the two.
OVERALL:
A very good flight shooter, especially for younger players. Plus, by beating the game on the hardest route, you'll open up one of the best endings out of any N64 game. That ending has a feeling ala Star Wars... I enjoyed it, I just wish there was more missions, so I'd have a bigger reason to keep playing the one player game. A worthy buy, especially for the current price of $39.99
